Ben Mor Coigach
Ben More Coigach, OS ref.: NC 10/04 OS map: sheet 15
This is a Scottish Wildlife Reserve named for the mountain that lies within it. There are trails but many reaching into the reserve offer a challenging hike. The bay hosts Great Northern Diver in the winter and a number of breeding birds, including Red Grouse, Ptarmigan and Golden Plover in summer.
Ben Mor Coigach dominates the landscape north of Ullapool. SWT's largest reserve covers 6,000 hectares and is still managed as a crofted estate. Coigach is a wild place and plants must be hardy to survive. From its summit the north west coast is laid out before you.
Wildlife Walk - Ben Mor Coigach
This route follows the old path that was the main connection between the Coigach Peninsula and Loch Broom before the road existed. It traces its way along the rugged sandstone face of Ben Mor Coigach which dominates the skyline as you approach from Ullapool. Stop at Ardmair and look past Isle Martin to the seemingly impassable face you are about to traverse. This is why it was known as 'Taking the Rock' (Gabhail a Chreig in Gaelic) but it is also known as the 'Postman's Path' from when the postal service used this way in 1860's.
The route is guided with slate waymarkers, but care should be taken following the path. Beginning at Achduart, follow a well made path as far as Coulnacraig. Here the path continues east, dipping down into a narrow gorge and eventually winding its way through scree and along an exposed rock face. At Geodha Mor, the route is less defined and takes you high up the Garbh Allt before crossing the burn and heading back down to the coast. Continuing along to lofty a point overlooking Camas Mor and Strath Canaird, the route now descends to the valley bottom and works its way along to the car park at Blughassary.
The route is 16 kms one way, arrangements will have to be made to return to your start point or you can make use of accommodation in Achiltibuie.
Species - Raven, ring ouzel, red grouse, ptarmigan, twite, stonechat, whinchat, redpoll, wheatear barnacle geese, and great northern diver. Grey seal, otter and red deer.
